Between the lines

“Between the lines”, mixed media, 50x75x15cm, 2024

This work stages two ceramic faces, each embedded within a system of intersecting lines. The upper figure is intersected by horizontal bands that suggest layers of sediment or waves of time, while the lower is enclosed by vertical structures that recall barriers, roots, or falling matter. The composition explores the different psychological resonances of these directions: horizontals are traditionally associated with calm, stability, and continuity, while verticals imply strength, order, but also confinement.

By placing the figures within these contrasting frameworks, the piece investigates how identity is shaped, limited, or even obscured by the structures that surround it. The title, Between the Lines, extends this inquiry: just as meaning often lies hidden between the lines of a text, the human presence here resists easy visibility, asking the viewer to look more closely and interpret beyond the surface.
