„Frozen Gaze“, Mixed Media, 51x51x7 cm, 2024

Dive into the mystical world of ancient mythology with "Frozen Gaze," an artwork that captures the mesmerizing beauty and power of Medusa. This piece invites you to delve into the legend where Medusa's gaze could turn onlookers to stone. However, here it is her own gaze that is eternally frozen.

At the center of the artwork is Medusa's face, intricately detailed and lifelike. Her expression, both serene and eerie, is meant to captivate the viewer. Only one eye is visible, symbolizing themes like partial perception, vulnerability, or concealment. This recalls Medusa's dual role in mythology: as a victim and as a symbol of terror.

The use of cool blues, greens, and whites evokes a sense of coldness and petrification, fitting the title "Frozen Gaze." The complex textures that depict the snakes in her hair add a dynamic, almost lifelike quality that brings Medusa's story to life.

Medusa, often seen as a symbol of the foreign and the threatening, is portrayed here in a way that evokes both empathy and fear. What do we see when we look at Medusa? And what does she see with her single eye? Does she feel power or powerlessness? Does she embody beauty or horror?

This artwork uses a combination of painting and sculpture to create a three-dimensional experience. The plastic design of the textures and the carefully chosen color palette make the piece not only visually but also tactilely engaging. This invites the viewer to step closer, to view the work from different angles, and to be captivated by the details.

Let "Frozen Gaze" ignite your imagination and transform your space with its enigmatic allure. Experience the legend in a new, profound way and let Medusa's story live on in your home.

The Story of Medusa:

Medusa, once a beautiful woman, was cursed by the goddess Athena. The reason for this curse was the desecration of Athena's temple by Poseidon, who seduced Medusa there. As punishment, Athena turned Medusa's hair into snakes and made her face so horrifying that anyone who looked at her would turn to stone. Medusa became a Gorgon, one of three sisters considered immortal monsters.

Her fate changed when the hero Perseus was sent on a mission to retrieve her head. With the help of divine gifts like a mirrored shield from Athena, winged sandals from Hermes, and an invisibility cap from Hades, Perseus managed to defeat Medusa by avoiding her gaze and only looking at her reflection in the shield. He beheaded her and later used her head as a weapon to defeat his enemies.
